Presidents and representatives of local football federations joining newly-formed South West Asia Football Federation (SWAFF) held a meeting, in Jeddah Saudi Arabia, headed by Dr. Adel Ezzat, President of Saudi Arabian Football Federation, who is commissioned to be the president of SWAFF. Present at the meeting as an observer was FIFA's Head of Governance Nodar Akhalkatsi.
In the meeting, it was approved to establish SWAFF. Members are football associations of Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Maldives, Sri Lanka and Nepal. The meeting addressed SWAFF's legal, financial & developmental areas, statute, infrastructure, competitions and general assembly.
The participants agreed to hold SWAFF's General Assembly on August 12th, during which the President and Executive Office Members will be elected, and Secretary General will be appointed. Highlights of SWAFF's activities were also agreed.
The meeting started with a statement by acting SWAFF's President, Dr. Adel Ezzat, who, in his name and on behalf of Mr. Turki Abdul Mohsen Al Sheikh – Chairman of General Sports Authority, welcomed member associations' presidents and representatives, expressing his pleasure to host the founding meeting in Saudi Arabia.
In the meeting, Ezzat expressed his thanks to FIFA's President Gianni Infantino for welcoming the idea of forming SWAFF and sending FIFA's Head of Governance to attend the meeting. He also offered thanks to AFC's President Sheikh Salman Al Khalifa for his support of the idea to improve and promote football in Asia, stressing that SWAFF will seek out to open communication channels with both FIFA and AFC to back SWAFF's programs.
SWAFF's President emphasized that the new federation would achieve its objectives, including providing support to member nations and working with them to enhance their administrative, technical, IT, marketing and logistic capabilities, as well as providing them with management expertise, infrastructure enhancement, building academies and organizing competitions across all levels.
The meeting came further to the first meeting which had been held in Jeddah in current May, in which the outlines of forming SWAFF were established. It was then agreed that Dr. Adel Ezzat, President of Saudi Arabian Football Federation, assuming SWAFF's presidency, and Lu'ai Al-Sbei'y being the Secretary general for administering SWAFF's affairs until the General Assembly is held.
